R&L delivered to our customer who has a small auto shop, because you couldnt go into the driveway he was street side and the shop employees unloaded his truck. He didnt have to do anything but close the door.

When we received the bill we had an additional charge of 80.00 dollars for limited access, limited access?

He didnt even go into the driveway, tried to dispute it with the broker and was told sorry we cant change it. Beware of the hidden charges deemed by the lazy driver!!

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $80.

Preferred solution: Price reduction.

Location: Fullerton, California

OK - trying to help you here, so bear with me...

I work in the LTL industry, I may or may not work for R+L :)

Limited access charges aren't always black and white. Some are specifically - prisons, farms, schools, homes etc.

It's not just the dock or lack or a dock, but the time it takes to make deliveries down narrow streets, with traffic and no easy way to turn a truck around etc... vs an industrial park with docks and such - time. Your delivery seems gray, at the least.

The driver doesn't get to determine if that charge is applied, no matter how lazy or proactive he is. The local service center manager has some influence, but it's basically determined by a carrier's billing department (local or corporate).

Also, NEVER consign a shipment to an individual. Either consign it to "Bill c/o ABC Body Shop" or to the business with "Attn Bill". Otherwise you will get charged for limited access about every time AND your shipment will be delayed a day to set an appointment, because when it's consigned to a person, it appears that it is shipping to a private home. Not saying it was the case here, but just a heads up.

In this instance, you are not technically R+L's customer, the broker is.

And you are the broker's customer. I have no idea if R+L charged the broker, or if the broker even bothered to look in to the charge to see if it was legitimate or an error - but it doesn't sound like he made much effort, he just told you that HE couldn't change what HE charged you. What conversation was had between the broker and R+L is unknown, but regardless of which may have been in the wrong, at the end of the day you got charged an unexpected $80 which stinks. What I would suggest is calling a carrier directly (R+L or whomever) and asking for a rep to come see you.

A rep will likely ask you questions about not only what you are shipping, but the type places it delivers. And for when it does actually apply, you can probably have a negotiated limited access charge that is less than $80, the same applies to liftgate service. Meantime your only recourse is with who is actually billing you, in this case I presume it's the 3rd party, not the carrier.

Regardless, from your description, I'd say you might could at least get SOME relief on that charge. Good luck, hope this helps.
